ABSTRACT: Research activity related to different aspects of
prevention, prediction, diagnosis and treatment of brain metastases has increased during recent years. One of the major databases (Scopus) contains 942 scientific articles that were published during the 5-year time period 2006-2010. Of these, 195 (21%) reported on single patient cases and 12 (1%) were reports of 2 cases. Little is known about their influence on advancement of the field or scientific merits. Do brain metastases case reports attract attention and provide stimuli for further research or do they go largely unrecognized? Different measures of impact, visibility and quality of published research are available, each with its own pros and cons. For the present evaluation, article citation rate was chosen. The median number of citations overall and stratified by year of publication was 0, except for the year 2006 when it was 2. As compared to other articles, case reports remained more often without citation (p<0.05 except for 2006 data). All case reports with 10 or more citations (n = 6) reported on newly introduced anticancer drugs, which commonly are prescribed to treat extracranial metastases, and the responses observed in single patients with brain metastases. Average annual numbers of citations were also calculated. The articles with most citations per year were the same six case reports mentioned above (the only ones that obtained more than 2.0 citations per year). Citations appeared to gradually increase during the first two years after publication but remained on a generally low or modest level. It cannot be excluded that case reports without citation provide interesting information to some clinicians or researchers. Apparently, case reports describing unexpected therapeutic success gain more attention, at least in terms of citation, than others.

ABSTRACT: Background Scientific productivity is closely related to
gross income, population, and cultures of the countries. Every country, more or less, has a responsibility of contributing to science. Materials and methods The publications, citations received, and the h-index under the category of dermatology in 43 journals between the years of 19992003 and 20042008 according to the ISI JCR data of 2008 were examined individually for each OECD country. Results In the journals under the category of dermatology between the years of 1999 and 2008, there were
89,319 publications, 76,899 of which were published by OECD countries.
USA ranks first with 27,109 publications and 196,002 citations; Germany, Japan, England, and France are the other countries among the top five, respectively. Regarding the number of publications, Turkey and Korea are among the top 10 by surpassing many Northern European countries. With regard to h-index and citations, Northern European countries and Canada rank among the top 10, while Japan, Spain, Turkey, and Korea rank behind.
The number of publications showed a significant correlation with the number of citations, population, gross domestic product, and h-index.
Conclusions Nearly half of all publications were performed by the European origin OECD countries, and one-third of all publications were performed by USA. Journals from Germany and France, which are published in their own language, receive fewer citations, but they contribute a lot to these countries with respect to the number of publications.

ABSTRACT: 'Tech mining' is a multistep process for the analysis of
science, technology, & innovation ('ST&I') information resources. It uses text mining, visualization, and communication tools to provide the empirical knowledge necessary to address management of technology questions. Tech mining can help assess mature or emerging fields of science and technology, such as nanotechnology. Here, we depict select analyses and visualizations of relevant ST&I data on the topics of nanoenhanced, thin-film solar cells and dye-sensitized solar cells. These analyses help identify complementary and competitive research activity, evaluate research productivity, assess research interdisciplinarity, understand nanotechnology developmental trajectories, and identify and forecast promising nanoapplications. ABSTRACT: Data mining is being increasingly applied to social
networks. Two relevant reasons are the growing availability of large volumes of relational data, boosted by the proliferation of social media web sites, and the intuition that an individual's connections can yield richer information than his/her isolate attributes. This synergistic combination can show to be germane to a variety of applications such as churn prediction, fraud detection and marketing campaigns. This paper attempts to provide a general and succinct overview of the essentials of social network analysis for those interested in taking a first look at this area and oriented to use data mining in social networks. ABSTRACT: What does it mean to author or coauthor a scholarly paper
or a painting? What conditions have to be fulfilled for authorship status to be granted? Must every researcher on a massively coauthored, high- energy physics paper have penned at least n words to warrant the appellation "coauthor"? Is the touch of the artist necessary for authorship to be granted, or is conceiving and superintending the production of the work sufficient? What kinds and scale of contributions warrant acknowledgment? This article explores authorship and attribution practices in the sciences and in the world of art.

ABSTRACT: Purpose - Ulrich's Serials Analysis System (USAS) is
based on Ulrich's Periodical Directory which has been an essential resource about periodical publications for 80 years, first in print, then later in CD-ROM and online versions. The purpose of this paper is to analyse the content and software features of USAS, based on tests made between July 2011 and January 2012.

Design/methodology/approach - In addition to depicting the overall profile of USAS, special emphasis was given to marketing-focused and marketing-related journals, and their coverage in academic multidisciplinary and business databases.

Findings - In light of the apparently everlasting library budget crises, the incessant increases in the subscription costs of journals and database licensing, and on the positive side the impressive growth of full text digital availability of journals through various sources, it was found that USAS can be a great asset in discovering alternatives, negotiating prices, and making educated decisions in collection development, as well as in reference services.

Originality/value - The paper presents an analysis of the Ulrich's Serials Analysis System from the perspective of journal coverage by academic databases.

ABSTRACT: Purpose - This study aims to understand the epistemic
foundation of the classification applied in the first Chinese library catalogue, the Seven Epitomes (Qilue).

Design/methodology/approach - Originating from a theoretical stance that situates knowledge organization in its social context, the study applies a multifaceted framework pertaining to five categories of textual data:
the Seven Epitomes; biographical information about the classificationist Liu Xin; and the relevant intellectual, political, and technological history.

Findings - The study discovers seven principles contributing to the epistemic foundation of the catalogue's classification: the Han imperial library collection imposed as the literary warrant; government functions considered for structuring texts; classicist morality determining the main classificatory structure; knowledge perceived and organized as a unity; objects, rather than subjects, of concern affecting categories at the main class level; correlative thinking connecting all text categories to a supreme knowledge embodied by the Six Classics; and classicist moral values resulting in both vertical and horizontal hierarchies among categories as well as texts.

Research limitations/implications - A major limitation of the study is its focus on the main classes, with limited attention to subclasses.
Future research can extend the analysis to examine subclasses of the same scheme. Findings from these studies may lead to a comparison between the epistemic approach in the target classification and the analytic one common in today's bibliographic classification.

Originality/value - The study is the first to examine in depth the epistemic foundation of traditional Chinese bibliographic classification, anchoring the classification in its appropriate social and historical context.

ABSTRACT: The large amount of information contained in
bibliographic databases has recently boosted the use of citations, and other indicators based on citation numbers, as tools for the quantitative assessment of scientific research. Citations counts are often interpreted as proxies for the scientific influence of papers, journals, scholars, and institutions. However, a rigorous and scientifically grounded methodology for a correct use of citation counts is still missing. In particular, cross-disciplinary comparisons in terms of raw citation counts systematically favors scientific disciplines with higher citation and publication rates. Here we perform an exhaustive study of the citation patterns of millions of papers, and derive a simple transformation of citation counts able to suppress the disproportionate citation counts among scientific domains. We find that the transformation is well described by a power-law function, and that the parameter values of the transformation are typical features of each scientific discipline.
Universal properties of citation patterns descend therefore from the fact that citation distributions for papers in a specific field are all part of the same family of univariate distributions.

ABSTRACT: Timbre is a key perceptual feature that allows
discrimination between different sounds. Timbral sensations are highly dependent on the temporal evolution of the power spectrum of an audio signal. In order to quantitatively characterize such sensations, the shape of the power spectrum has to be encoded in a way that preserves certain physical and perceptual properties. Therefore, it is common practice to encode short-time power spectra using psychoacoustical frequency scales. In this paper, we study and characterize the statistical properties of such encodings, here called timbral code-words.
In particular, we report on rank-frequency distributions of timbral code- words extracted from 740 hours of audio coming from disparate sources such as speech, music, and environmental sounds. Analogously to text corpora, we find a heavy-tailed Zipfian distribution with exponent close to one. Importantly, this distribution is found independently of different encoding decisions and regardless of the audio source. Further analysis on the intrinsic characteristics of most and least frequent code- words reveals that the most frequent code-words tend to have a more homogeneous structure. We also find that speech and music databases have specific, distinctive code-words while, in the case of the environmental sounds, this database-specific code-words are not present. Finally, we find that a Yule-Simon process with memory provides a reasonable quantitative approximation for our data, suggesting the existence of a common simple generative mechanism for all considered sound sources.

ABSTRACT: Background. Evaluation of the social and economic
outcomes of health research funding is an area of intense interest and debate. Typically, approaches have sought to assess the impact of research funding by medical charities or regional government bodies.
Independent research institutes have a similar need for accountability in investment decisions but have different objectives and funding, thus the existing approaches are not appropriate.

Methods. An evaluation methodology using eight indicators was developed to assess research performance across three broad categories: knowledge creation; inputs to research; and commercial, clinical and public health outcomes. The evaluation approach was designed to provide a balanced assessment across laboratory, clinical and public health research.

Results and discussion. With a diverse research agenda supported by a large number of researchers, the Research Performance Evaluation process at the Murdoch Childrens Research Institute has, by necessity, been iterative and responsive to the needs of the Institute and its staff.
Since its inception 5 years ago, data collection systems have been refined, the methodology has been adjusted to capture appropriate data, staff awareness and participation has increased, and issues regarding the methodology and scoring have been resolved.

Conclusions. The Research Performance Evaluation methodology described here provides a fair and transparent means of disbursing internal funding. It is also a powerful tool for evaluating the Institute's progress towards achieving its strategic goals, and is therefore a key driver for research excellence.

ABSTRACT: Despite the relatively recent emergence of the Unified
Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology (UTAUT). the originating article has already been cited by a large number of studies, and hence it appears to have become a popular theoretical choice within the field of information system (IS)/information technology (IT) adoption and diffusion. However, as yet there have been no attempts to analyse the reasons for citing the originating article. Such a systematic review of citations may inform researchers and guide appropriate future use of the theory. This chapter therefore presents the results of a bibliometric analysis and systematic review of 450 citations of the originating article in an attempt to better understand the reasons for citation, and use and adaptations of the theory. Findings revealed that although a large number of studies have cited the originating article since its appearance, only 43 actually utilized the theory or its constructs in their empirical research for examining IS/IT-related issues. This chapter also classifies and discusses these citations and explores the limitations of UTAUT use in existing research.
