ABSTRACT: Dramatic increase in the number of academic publications
has led to growing demand for efficient organization of the resources to meet researchers' needs. As a result, a number of network services have compiled databases from the public resources scattered over the Internet.
However, publications by different conferences and journals adopt different citation styles. It is an interesting problem to accurately extract metadata from a citation string which is formatted in one of thousands of different styles. It has attracted a great deal of attention in research in recent years. In this paper, based on the notion of sequence alignment, we present a citation parser called BibPro that extracts components of a citation string. To demonstrate the efficacy of BibPro, we conducted experiments on three benchmark data sets. The results show that BibPro achieved over 90 percent accuracy on each benchmark. Even with citations and associated metadata retrieved from the web as training data, our experiments show that BibPro still achieves a reasonable performance.

ABSTRACT: Scientific publications on fluoropolymers are sought in
the Chemical Abstracts Plus database accessed via the SciFinder system.
For the period 1946-2010, nearly 116 000 publications containing the search term fluoropolymers as the main concept are found. For nearly 75 000 publications over the period 2000-2009, a detailed bibliometric analysis is performed on the basis of thematic sections and subject headings of the database, substances, publication types, languages and authors of publications, journal titles, and organization names. On the basis of the results, recommendations for improving Russian indicators in the field of fluoropolymers are suggested.

ABSTRACT: Nowadays the ability to innovate is the key factor in
creating the innovative firm (in the micro-scale) or innovative economy (in a wider prospect). Post-academic and industrial science shortens the gap between scientific discovery and its commercial application.
University-industry relations aimed at creating innovations take place in both developed and developing countries. In developed countries basing on the market mechanism, one can notice the emergence of bridging institutions which help to organise the knowledge and technology transfer. Developing countries try to adopt Western standards of knowledge production, but their economic and historical past make the various elements of university-industry cooperation dominate.

ABSTRACT: Many ethical concerns surrounding human genetics studies
remain unresolved. We report here the situation in Cameroon.

Objectives: To describe the profile of human genetic studies that used Cameroonian DNA samples, with specific focus on i) the research centres that were involved, ii) authorship, iii) population studied, iv) research topics and v) ethics disclosure, with the aim of raising ethical issues that emerged from these studies.

Method: Bibliometric Studies; we conducted a PubMed-based systematic review of all the studies on human genetics that used Cameroonian DNA samples from 1989 to 2009.

Results and Discussion: Fifty articles were identified, involving predominantly research centres from Europe (64%) and America (32%). Only
7 (14%) Cameroonian institutions and 14 (28%) Cameroonian authors were associated with these publications.

At least 52% of publications were devoted to population genetics (variation/migration patterns) amongst 30 Cameroonian ethnic groups. Very few studies concerned public health related genetic issues and only 5
(10%) references were found for hemoglobinopathies like sickle cell anaemia. Almost all DNA samples are 'banked' outside of the African continent.

Capacity building, rights to the genetic information and benefits to the individuals, communities and populations who contribute to these studies are addressed.

Conclusions: 1) Our data suggests the need for a wider debate towards building capacity and addressing ethical issues related to human genomic research in sub-Saharan Africa and specifically in Cameroon; 2) National ethical guidelines and regulations concerning the collection, use and storage of human DNA are urgently needed in Cameroon.

ABSTRACT: Reference thresholds for the scientific production and
impact of internationally visible Spanish research within the areas defined by the Spanish National Agency for Evaluation and Prospective
(ANEP) are presented. These percentile reference tables are constructed from the population of researchers who applied for a project within the
2007 National R & D Plan (n = 3.356) and are to be used as benchmarks, permitting comparisons between researchers' bibliometric behavior and mean performance in their respective scientific disciplines. Data relating to mean production, impact and visibility for each ANEP area is also presented. The internationalization process of these areas between 2000 and 2006 is discussed, with special emphasis on the Social Sciences.
Finally, we recommend these reference thresholds be used by funding agencies and research institutions as instruments of evaluation in their selection processes.

ABSTRACT: The goal of this work is to analyse the production of
reviews published between 2007 and 2009 in the scholarly journals in the Social Sciences and Humanities contained in the ISOC database. Different aspects were analysed: time pattern, journals, authorship and author affiliation. Also examined were the books reviewed, by publication type, language, authorship, publisher and time lag between the books'
publication and the appearance of the reviews. The results concerning the reviews show a constant reduction in their production and a large number concentrated in the humanities. Authors are mostly Spaniards and university lecturers, who publish alone and have a very low level of productivity. There is also a high level of endogamy among those authors who are members of editorial boards. The results concerning the reviewed books reveal that few titles were reviewed more than once, there are a large number of monographs, mostly in Spanish, and there is a long time lag between a book's publication and the appearance of its review.

ABSTRACT: The objective of this work is the study of the
characteristics and disparities among the existing sub-specialities within interdisciplinary categories, putting forward the need to identify and assess each one separately. The Web of Science (WoS) databases were examined for the years 2003-2006, in order to explore the possible differences between biotechnology research teams in Madrid according to their specialization profile. This Spanish region has the highest output in biotechnology (27 %), a category that interacts with other disciplines, such as microbiology, biochemistry and food science. For this reason, the study of teams includes, in a second analysis, not just the documents in this category, but also publications of the team leaders, regardless of their discipline. With these data, the influence of the specialization on the teams' characteristics, collaboration patterns and impact is discussed. Three typologies are identified according to sub-specialities: a) CORE teams (publishing 50 % or more in biotechnology); b) BASIC teams (publishing in biochemistry and other basic disciplines); and c) MEDIUM teams (publishing in food science and other less basic disciplines). By means of statistical tests, significant differences in output and impact were found among them. The article concludes that these disparities should be taken into account when assessing categories of interdisciplinary research such as biotechnology.

ABSTRACT: The study examines the h-index of textile researchers in
Spain and, for the first time, provides information, on the range of values of this index in the area of textile-related knowledge. This paper reports on a study of 10 scientific production indicators for Spanish textile researchers over the period 1955-2009. The population studied consisted of 73 researchers affiliated with 6 different institutions.
Textile investigators represent a heterogeneous community, since they come from different areas of knowledge. The h-index studied presents a positive correlation, ranging between intense and notable, with the number of publications, publications by year, number of citations, citations per year, number of citations received by the most cited publication. The correlation is significant but negative concerning the percentage of authors' non-cited publications. The Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Cientficas (CSIC) has higher levels than the other institutions for the following indicators: h-index, number of publications, citations, citation per year, maximum number of citations.
The Instituto Tecnologico Textil de Alcoy (AITEX) has the highest levels for the following indicators: h-index per year of activity and percentage of non-cited publications. Finally, a relation is shown between the h- index and three (latent) factors that explain the other indicators and provide three dimensions of the h-index.

ABSTRACT: Background: Drowning is a constant global problem which
claims approximately half a million victims worldwide each year, whereas the number of near-drowning victims is considerably higher. Public health strategies to reduce the burden of death are still limited. While research activities in the subject drowning grow constantly, yet there is no scientometric evaluation of the existing literature at the present time.

Methods: The current study uses classical bibliometric tools and visualizing techniques such as density equalizing mapping to analyse and evaluate the scientific research in the field of drowning. The interpretation of the achieved results is also implemented in the context of the data collection of the WHO.

Results: All studies related to drowning and listed in the ISI-Web of Science database since 1900 were identified using the search term "drowning". Implementing bibliometric methods, a constant increase in quantitative markers such as number of publications per state, publication language or collaborations as well as qualitative markers such as citations were observed for research in the field of drowning.
The combination with density equalizing mapping exposed different global patterns for research productivity and the total number of drowning deaths and drowning rates respectively. Chart techniques were used to illustrate bi- and multilateral research cooperation.

Conclusions: The present study provides the first scientometric approach that visualizes research activity on the subject of drowning. It can be assumed that the scientific approach to this topic will achieve even greater dimensions because of its continuing actuality.
