Abstract:
Background: The value of German publications in otorhinolaryngology in comparison to the international community has not been analyzed in detail yet.
Material and Methods: Using the Web of Science (R) data base a quantitative bibliometric analysis of publications in the field of otorhinolaryngology was performed for the years 2000-2010. We compared countries, institutions and individual authors in relation to the whole field of otorhinolaryngology and to special topics.
Results: 57157 ENT-publications were identified for the period between 2000 and 2010. The second most number, 12% of the publications came from Germany. Ranking the authors with most publications, 6 German scientists could be found on the first 20 ranks. USA, Japan, and Germany were the dominating countries looking on publication for the subspecialties. From Germany originated the most publications for the topics smell and taste disorders.
Conclusion: Publications form German institutions in the field of clinical and experimental otorhinolaryngology have a high impact in international comparison. German authors could be found in all subspecialties of otorhinolaryngology on the top 3 places.

Abstract:
Bibliometric methods for analyzing and describing research output have been supported internationally by the establishment and operation of organizations such as the Institute for Scientific Information (ISI) or Scimago Ranking Institutions (SRI). This study provides an overview of the research performance of major World countries in the field cytokines, Citometric bead assays and QSAR, the most important journals in which they published their research articles, and the most important academic institutions publishing them. The analysis was based on Thomson Scientific's Web of Science (WoS), and Scimago group calculated bibliometric indicators of publication activity and actual citation impact. Studying the time period 2005-2010, and shows the visibility of Medicinal Chemistry Bioorganic in this thematic noting that the visibility of a journal must take into account not only the *impact factor*, but the prestige, popularity and representativeness of the theme that addresses t!

Abstract:
Purpose - EigenFactor service went through some changes in 2011 before issuing the most current edition (EF-2010) following the release of the 2010 edition of the Journal Citation Reports (JCR-2010) in mid-2011. Ranking journals by the EigenFactor Score (EFS) and the Article Influence Score (AIS) offered an additional pair of bibliometric indicators to assess the impact of journals in the (sub)disciplinary fields of the sciences and social sciences. In evaluating the clout, importance, and impact of journals it is essential to compare apples to apples, i.e. limiting the assessments to journals belonging to the same (sub)disciplinary areas. This paper aims to examine the quality of the subject categories created for EF-2010 and of the JCR-2010 subject categories as implemented within the EigenFactor services.
Design/methodology/approach - The paper compares the adequacy of the subject categories in the JCR-2010 and EF-2010, examining the assignment of 77 information and library science journals and 50 business/marketing journals to the 64 subject categories used in EF-2010.
Findings - The study finds that EF-2010 uses a very broad categorisation system of merely 64 subject categories along with the much more specific subject categories originally developed and enhanced for the JCR database of the Institute for Scientific Information (now Thomson-Reuters). JCR-2010 has four times as many categories than the former, and would offer a far more realistic comparison of the impact of comparable journals in EF-2010 if the developers of the EigenFactor database had retained the assignment of the journals to the JCR subject categories. The inconsistency, inaccuracy and incompleteness of the journal classification practice in EF-2010 creates a highly distorted picture of the standing of journals in their (sub)disciplinary leagues, and makes it very difficult for the users to reproduce the far more refined league lists of journals.
Originality/value - The paper describes the most serious limitations and errors in the classification of journals in the EF-2010 edition.

Abstract:
Purpose - The purpose of this research is to investigate the relationship between journal self-citation and journal *impact factor* (JIF)/journal immediacy index (JII).
Design/methodology/approach - This research examined research papers in 20 key journals in environmental engineering with a publication year range of 1999 to 2008. The bibliographical information of cited references was obtained from the Science Citation Index Expanded of the Web of Science.
Findings - The findings indicated that JII? and JII values changed only slightly regardless of the inclusion or exclusion of self-citations, suggesting that the influence of self-citation on journals was insignificant. Consequently there is no need for evaluations to exclude journal self-citations in journal or researcher evaluations. In addition the findings indicated that JIF and five-year JIF were highly correlated, suggesting that it would not be necessary to extend the calculation of JIF to five years. Considering the cost in terms of time and effort, the two-year JIF is sufficient in the discipline of environmental engineering.
Originality/value - This research provides a better understanding of journal self-citations in journal or researcher evaluation with JIF and JII as indicators.

Abstract:
Very few studies on the assessment and evolution of Chinese economics research draw on quantitative methods, namely bibliometrics. Bibliometrics is a powerful tool that helps to explore, organize and analyze large amounts of information in a quantitative manner. Selecting the most important economic journal focusing on the Chinese economy - the China Economic Review (CER) - we classified and assessed all the (512) articles that have been published in CER from its founding (1989) to December 2010. Based on these articles, and undertaking an exploratory statistical analysis on three databases - a '*bibliographic*' database (512 articles), a 'roots' database (over 10 thousand citations), and an 'influence' database (over 3 thousand citations), we concluded that: 1) 'Economic Development, Technological Change, and Growth': 'Economic Systems', and 'International economics' are the most important topics for Chinese economics literature; 2) there is a trend in Chinese economics res!
earch for growing 'rigor', associated to a noticeable rise in the weight of formal/mathematical-based articles; 3) the 'International economics' topic does not influence nor is it influenced by Chinese economics literature; and 4) Chinese economics literature is characterized by a certain level of endogamy, given that its range of influence is rather concentrated (geographically) in China and the USA. Abstract:
Link prediction is the task of inferring the existence or absence of certain relationships among data objects such as identity, interaction, and collaboration. Link prediction is found in various applications in the fields of information integration, recommender systems, bioinformatics, and social network analysis. The increasing interest in dynamically changing networks has led to growing interest in a more general link prediction problem called temporal link prediction in the data mining and machine learning communities. However, only links among nodes at the same time point are considered in temporal link prediction. We propose a new link prediction problem called cross-temporal link prediction in which the links among nodes at different time points are inferred. A typical example of cross-temporal link prediction is cross-temporal entity resolution to determine the identity of real entities represented by data objects observed in different time periods. In dynamic enviro!
nments, the features of data change over time, making it difficult to identify cross-temporal links by directly comparing observed data. Other examples of cross-temporal links are asynchronous communications in social networks such as Facebook and Twitter, where a message is posted in reply to a previous message. We adopt a dimension reduction approach to cross-temporal link prediction; that is, data objects in different time frames are mapped into a common low-dimensional latent feature space, and the links are identified on the basis of the distance between the data objects. The proposed method uses different low-dimensional feature projections in different time frames, enabling it to adapt to changes in the latent features over time. Using multi-task learning, it jointly learns a set of feature projection matrices from the training data, given the assumption of temporal smoothness of the projections. The optimal solutions are obtained by solving a single generalized eige!
nvalue problem. Experiments using a real-world set of *bibliog!
 raphic*
data for cross-temporal entity resolution and a real-world set of emails for unobserved asynchronous communication inference showed that introducing time-dependent feature projections improved the accuracy of link prediction.

Abstract:
Blended learning is a diverse and expanding area of design and inquiry that combines face-to-face and online modalities. As blended learning research matures, numerous voices enter the conversation. This study begins the search for the center of this emerging area of study by finding the most cited scholarship on blended learning. Using Harzing's Publish or Perish software (http://www.harzing.com/pop.htm), we determined the most frequently cited books, book chapters, and articles on the subject of blended learning, as well as the journals in which these highly *cited articles* appeared. Through these findings we offer some conclusions about where the conversations about blended learning are happening, which scholars are at the forefront of these conversations, and other emerging trends in blended learning scholarship.

Abstract:
Purpose - The purpose of this research is to investigate the relationship between journal self-citation and journal impact factor (JIF)/journal immediacy index (JII).
Design/methodology/approach - This research examined research papers in 20 key journals in environmental engineering with a publication year range of 1999 to 2008. The *bibliographical* information of cited references was obtained from the Science Citation Index Expanded of the Web of Science.

ABSTRACT: Objective: The purpose of this study is to analyse

Iranian scientific publications in the neuroscience subfields by

librarians and neuroscientists, using Science Citation Index Expanded

(SCIE) via Web of Science data over the period, 20022008. Methods: Data

were retrieved from the SCIE. Data were collected from the subject area

of the database and classified by neuroscience experts into 14 subfields.

To identify the citation patterns, we applied the impact factor and the

number of publication. Data were also analysed using HISTCITE, Excel 2007

and SPSS. Results: Seven hundred and thirty-four papers have been

published by Iranian between 2002 and 2008. Findings showed a growing

trend of neuroscience papers in the last 3 years with most papers (264)

classified in the neuropharmacology subfield. There were fewer papers in

neurohistory, psychopharmacology and artificial intelligence.

International contributions of authors were mostly in the neurology

subfield, and Collaboration Coefficient for the neuroscience subfields in

Iran was 0.686 which is acceptable. Most international collaboration

between Iranians and developed countries was from USA. Eighty-seven

percent of the published papers were in journals with the impact factor

between 0 and 4; 25% of papers were published by the researchers

affiliated to Tehran University of Medical Sciences. Conclusion: Progress

of neuroscience in Iran is mostly seen in the neuropharmacology and the

neurology subfields. Other subfields should also be considered as a

research priority by health policymakers. As this study was carried out

by the collaboration of librarians and neuroscientists, it has been

proved valuable for both librarians and policymakers. This study may be

encouraging for librarians from other developing countries.

ABSTRACT: We propose a new method to assess the merit of any set of

scientific papers in a given field based on the citations they receive.

Given a field and a citation impact indicator, such as the mean citation

or the h-index, the merit of a given set of n articles is identified with

the probability that a randomly drawn set of n articles from a given pool

of articles in that field has a lower citation impact according to the

indicator in question. The method allows for comparisons between sets of

articles of different sizes and fields. Using a dataset acquired from

Thomson Scientific that contains the articles published in the periodical

literature in the period 1998-2007, we show that the novel approach

yields rankings of research units different from those obtained by a

direct application of the mean citation or the h-index.

ABSTRACT: . The Hirsch index (commonly referred to as h-index) is a
bibliometric indicator which is widely recognized as effective for
measuring the scientific production of a scholar since it summarizes size
and impact of the research output. In a formal setting, the h-index is
actually an empirical functional of the distribution of the citation
counts received by the scholar. Under this approach, the asymptotic
theory for the empirical h-index has been recently exploited when the
citation counts follow a continuous distribution and, in particular,
variance estimation has been considered for the Pareto-type and the
Weibull-type distribution families. However, in bibliometric
applications, citation counts display a distribution supported by the
integers. Thus, we provide general properties for the empirical h-index
under the small- and large-sample settings. In addition, we also
introduce consistent non-parametric variance estimation, which allows for
the implementation of large-sample set estimation for the theoretical h-
index.

ABSTRACT: Objectives A journal impact factor represents the mean
number of citations per article published. Designed as one tool to
measure the relative importance of a journal, impact factors are often
incorporated into academic evaluation of investigators. The authors
sought to determine how impact factors of emergency medicine (EM)
journals compare to journals from other medical and surgical specialties
and if any change has taken place over time. Methods The 2010 impact
factors and 5-year impact factors for each journal indexed by the Thomson
Reuters ISI Web of Knowledge Journal Citation Reports (JCR) were
collected, and EM, medical, and surgical specialties were evaluated. The
maximum, median, and interquartile range (IQR) of the current impact
factor and 5-year impact factor in each journal category were determined,
and specialties were ranked according to the summary statistics. The top
three impact factor journals for each specialty were analyzed, and growth
trends from 2001 through 2010 were examined with random effects linear
regression. Results Data from 2,287 journals in 31 specialties were
examined. There were 23 EM journals with a current maximum impact factor
of 4.177, median of 1.269, and IQR of 0.400 to 2.176. Of 23 EM journals,
57% had a 5-year impact factor available, with a maximum of 4.531, median
of 1.325, and IQR of 0.741 to 2.435. The top three EM journals had a mean
standard deviation (+/- SD) impact factor of 3.801 (+/- 0.621) and median
of 4.142 and a mean (+/- SD) 5-year impact factor of 3.788 (+/- 1.091)
and median of 4.297, with a growth trend of 0.211 (95% confidence
interval [CI] = 0.177 to 0.245; p < 0.001). By any criterion analyzed, EM
journals ranked no higher than 24th among 31 specialties. Conclusions
Emergency medicine journals rank low in impact factor summary statistics
and growth trends among 31 medical and surgical specialties.

ABSTRACT: We analyze the online response to the preprint
publication of a cohort of 4,606 scientific articles submitted to the
preprint database arXiv.org between October 2010 and May 2011. We study
three forms of responses to these preprints: downloads on the arXiv.org
site, mentions on the social media site Twitter, and early citations in
the scholarly record. We perform two analyses. First, we analyze the
delay and time span of article downloads and Twitter mentions following
submission, to understand the temporal configuration of these reactions
and whether one precedes or follows the other. Second, we run regression
and correlation tests to investigate the relationship between Twitter
mentions, arXiv downloads, and article citations. We find that Twitter
mentions and arXiv downloads of scholarly articles follow two distinct
temporal patterns of activity, with Twitter mentions having shorter
delays and narrower time spans than arXiv downloads. We also find that
the volume of Twitter mentions is statistically correlated with arXiv
downloads and early citations just months after the publication of a
preprint, with a possible bias that favors highly mentioned articles.

ABSTRACT: This paper proposes an approach to automatically extract
metadata from educational resources using citation chain. Tracing the
cited relationship between literatures, utilizing pattern matching
algorithm to determine the most appropriate pattern for resolution,
taking advantage of preorder traversal algorithm to query literature one
by one, the metadata of educational resources, which are cited by others,
can be extracted automatically. The experimental results show that the
approach we proposed is fast, efficient in metadata auto-extracting for
educational resources.
