A new visualization method for research assessment, called the academic
spectrum, is introduced. Two types of academic spectra are
distinguished: field spectra and time spectra. Using appropriate scaling
factors these spectra facilitate comparisons between scientometric
indicators such as the h-index, the total number of citations received
and the impact. Academic spectra can be calculated for journals,
countries, research institutes, whole universities and single
researchers alike. They are meant to help the scientometric practitioner
to get a first impression of the data.
