Title: Lexikos at Eighteen: An Analysis

Authors: de Schryver, GM

Author Full Names: de Schryver, Gilles-Maurice

Source: LEXIKOS 19: 372-403 2009

Language: English

Document Type: Article

Author Keywords: LEXIKOS; LEXICOGRAPHY; METALEXICOGRAPHY; DICTIONARIES;

Abstract: At eighteen, Lexikos became a major player in the field of
linguistics, by being awarded an Impact Factor. This article presents a
double analysis of the foundation that led to this success. On the one
hand a thorough statistical study is undertaken with regard to all
contributors and their contributions to Lexikos. To this end a metadata
database was designed, with the aim to answer the question: 'Who
publishes what type of material from where and when?' On the other hand
a content analysis is carried out which focuses on the actual topics
(i.e. 'keywords') in Lexikos. To this end an all-inclusive text corpus
containing all the Lexikos material was built, with the aim to answer
the question: 'What are the major trends in Lexikos?'

Title: Citations to scientific articles: Its distribution and dependence
on the article features

Authors: Vieira, ES; Gomes, JANF

Author Full Names: Vieira, E. S.; Gomes, J. A. N. F.

Source: JOURNAL OF INFORMETRICS 4 (1): 1-13 JAN 2010

Language: English

Document Type: Article

Author Keywords: Citations analyses; Field; Impact

KeyWords Plus: PUBLICATION; IMPACT; FREQUENCY; SCIENCE; PRODUCTIVITY;
NATIONS; COUNTS; PAY

Abstract: The citation counts are increasingly used to assess the impact
on the scientific community of publications produced by a researcher, an
institution or a country. There are many institutions that use
bibliometric indicators to steer research policy and for hiring or
promotion decisions. Given the importance that counting citations has
today, the aim of the work presented here is to show how citations are
distributed within a scientific area and determine the dependence of the
citation count on the article features. All articles referenced in the
Web of Science in 2004 for Biology & Biochemistry, Chemistry,
Mathematics and Physics were considered.
We show that the distribution of citations is well represented by a
double exponential-Poisson law. There is a dependence of the mean
citation rate on the number of co-authors, the number of addresses and
the number of references, although this dependence is a little far from
the linear behaviour. For the relation between the mean impact and the
number of pages the dependence obtained was very low. For Biology &
Biochemistry and Chemistry we found a linear behaviour between the mean
citation per article and impact factor and for Mathematics and Physics
the results obtained are near to the linear behaviour. (C) 2009 Elsevier

Title: The difference between popularity and prestige in the sciences
and in the social sciences: A bibliometric analysis

Authors: Franceschet, M

Abstract: The status of a journal is commonly determined by two factors:
popularity and prestige. While the former counts citations, the latter
recursively weights them with the prestige of the citing journals. We
make a thorough comparison of the bibliometric concepts of popularity
and prestige for journals in the sciences and in the social sciences. We
find that the two notions diverge more for the hard sciences, including
physics, engineering, material sciences, and computer sciences, than
they do for the geosciences, for biology-medical disciplines, and for
the social sciences. Moreover, we identify the science and social
science journals with the highest diverging ranks in popularity and
prestige compilations. (C) 2009 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Title: The Hirsch spectrum: A novel tool for analyzing scientific

Abstract: This paper introduces the Hirsch spectrum (h-spectrum) for
analyzing the academic reputation of a scientific journal. h-Spectrum is
a novel tool based on the Hirsch (h) index. It is easy to construct:
considering a specific journal in a specific interval of time,
h-spectrum is defined as the distribution representing the h-indexes
associated to the authors of the journal articles. This tool allows
defining a reference profile of the typical author of a journal, compare
different journals within the same scientific field, and provide a rough
indication of prestige/reputation of a journal in the scientific
community. h-Spectrum can be associated to every journal. Ten specific
journals in the Quality Engineering/Quality Management field are
analyzed so as to preliminarily investigate the h-spectrum
characteristics. (C) 2009 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract: This paper provides a ranking of 69 marketing journals using a
new Hirsch-type index, the hg-index which is the geometric mean of hg.
The applicability of this index is tested on data retrieved from Google
Scholar on marketing journal articles published between 2003 and 2007.
The authors investigate the relationship between the hg-ranking, ranking
implied by Thomson Reuters' Journal Impact Factor for 2008, and rankings
in previous citation-based studies of marketing journals. They also test
two models of consumption of marketing journals that take into account
measures of citing (based on the hg-index), prestige, and reading
preference. (C) 2009 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract: Bibliographic digital libraries play a significant role in
conducting research and, in the past few years, have started to move
from closed to more open social platforms. However, in this, they have
faced challenges (e.g., from Web spam) in maintaining the level of
scholarly precision-the ratio of relevant citations retrieved by search.
This paper describes a hybrid approach that uses online social
collaboration and reputation based social moderation to reduce the cost
and to speed up the construction of scholarly bibliographies that are
comprehensive, have better quality citations and higher precision. We
implemented selected social features for an established digital
humanities project (the Cervantes Project) and compared the results with
a number of closed and open current bibliographies. We found this can
help in building scholarly bibliographies and significantly improve
precision outcomes.

Abstract: In this paper we show for selected period (1997-2008), the
journals in the subject Materials Science, Ceramics in which were for
spanish authors published in Spain (24), analyzed from a bibliometric
point of view the publications found (1240) the document type (Journal
Article or Review), detailing the bibliometric results (number of
documents weighted impact factor, relative impact factor and the ratio
between the number of citations and the number of documents) from an
institutional standpoint. Among those with a scientific representative
stands out prominently the Institute of Ceramics and Glass. Impact
Factor highlighted by the Institute of Construction Science Eduardo
Torroja. Furthermore, the journal Boletin de la Sociedad Espanola de
Ceramica y Vidrio brings together the 32.74% of the Spanish scientific
output, being also the first journal for number of documents in that
subject. It also confirmed a moderate international coll! aboration,
with France and the United States as the main countries from that
standpoint.

Abstract: We present ground-based measurements of aerosol mass, optical
properties and vertical extinction profiles acquired in M'Bour, Senegal
(16.96 degrees W; 14.39 degrees N) from January 2006 to September 2008.
This place of the world is all year long affected by the export of
mineral dust as it moves westward to the north Atlantic ocean. The
maximum in the dust activity is observed in summer (June-July),
corresponding to a maximum in the aerosol optical thickness (above 0.5)
and single scattering albedo (above 0.95). It also corresponds to a
maximum in the top altitude of the transported aerosol layer (up to 6
km) and aerosol optical thickness scale height (up to 3.5 km) due to the
presence of the Saharan Air Layer located between 2 and 6 km. The late
summer shows an additional low level aerosol layer that increases in
thickness in autumn. Severe dust storms are also systematically observed
in spring (March) but with a lower vertical development and a stronger
impact (! factor 2 to 3) on the ground-level mass compared to summer.
Sporadic events of biomass burning aerosols are observed in winter
(January) and particularly in January 2006 when the biomass burning
aerosol are advected between 1.5 and 3.5 km high. On average, the
seasonal signal in the aerosol optical properties and vertical
distribution is very similar from year to year over our 3 year
monitoring.
