Abstract: Established scholars and graduate students researching French 
doctoral dissertations prior to the last ten years often find that there 
are deferent doctorates for the same discipline appearing in the grey 
literature. This exploratory bibliometric study attempts to map doctorates 
granted in one canonical discipline; i.e. philosophy. Since philosophy 
transcends both the social sciences and the humanities in French academia, 
doctorates in philosophy were examined for their doctoral type and 
institutional affiliation. Major and intellectually significant patterns 
of geographical and institutional dispersion are revealed.
