Abstract:
Books, as well as journals, are cited in scientists' journal articles. We
examined the books cited in the journal articles that were published by
authors at a large university during 1981-2001. We found that (1) the
citation data conform to Zipf's Law, (2) most citations are to recent
titles, and (3) there are differences between different disciplines that
appear to conform to traditional assumptions about user practices in
different scientific disciplines.
