EXCERPT FROM PAPER:
Whereas the world of science still attaches great weight to the authority
of the source, which is quantified using objective criteria based on the
numbers of citations, and presented as an “impact factor”, journalism has
no such clear criteria. A Swedish study in which 110 scientific
journalists were asked to specify their main indicators of professional
quality found that sources or information were ranked third, after respect
for facts and a sense of professional responsibility. Scientific reporting
could be improved by extending to information sources the concepts of the
new “precision journalism”, an approach that holds that scientific methods
should be extrapolated to journalism.
