Dear Bernie,
I worked extensively with Olga Amsterdamska on this question for the
case of a set of papers in biochemistry. The textual usages of citations
in citing texts were published in: "Citations: Indicators of
Significance," Scientometrics 15(5-6) (1989) 449-471. The results of a
questionnaire among the citing authors in:
<http://www.leydesdorff.net/sthv90> Dimensions of Citation Analysis,
Science, Technology and Human Values 15 (1990) 305-335.
With kind regards,
Loet
