"The Challenge of Scientometrics" 2nd edition available at the Internet

Dear colleagues,

I made a second edition of "The Challenge of Scientometrics: The
development, measurement, and self-organization of scientific
communications" (Leiden: DSWO Press/Leiden University, 1995) available at
http://www.upublish.com/books/leydesdorff-sci.htm . The second edition is
enlarged with a section about technological trajectories, but not
essentially different from the first.

Among other things, a comprehensive set of probabilistic entropy measures
is provided for studying complex developments in networks of, for example,
words and citations. Some applications (e.g., the use of indicators for the
prediction; a test for path-dependency in information systems) are further
elaborated.

This study can also be considered as the methodological complement to "A
Sociological Theory of Communications: The Self-Organization of the
Knowledge-Based Society" (Universal Publishers, 2001) which is now
available at http://www.upublish.com/books/leydesdorff.htm. The two books
provide theory and methods for the investigation of the knowledge base in
socio-cognitive processes of communication and codification.
