The paper by B. Bowman, entitled "Impact Factor", is an
extended abstract of a talk given to heads of librarians
of the German Max-Planck-Society. It introduces to the ISI-
concept of the Journal impact factor and the Journal Citation
Reports. It points to the well-known fact that the citedness
(impact) of single articles can considerably deviate from the
journal impact factor. It states that, therefore, the 'impact
factors of journals should not be used for evaluating research'.
For librarians, the author says, the journal impact factors can
be a valuable tool for journal acquisition policy.
