[Sigmet-officers] Debate

Dear all,
Thanks Cassidy and Judit for your helpful feedback. You discuss two topics: (a) the Webmar and (b) the panel. In this email I will deal with the first topic, and start a separate thread for the second topic.
Regarding the Crown indicator, I attended the session at the 2010 Science and Technology conference to which Judit refers. I agree that the exchange was intense, but the exchange between at them at 2008 Science and Technology conference workshop was lively but less intense. Perhaps the difference this time may have stemmed from Loet feeling that the session chair (a colleague of Ton) did not give him enough opportunity to express his criticisms of the Crown Indicator. This leads to what I consider to be the problem with a debate that focuses on the Crown Indicator: I am averse to omitting either Loet or someone from CWTS from a debate focusing on the Crown indicator and pairing Loet with someone from CWTS could put the Moderator in a difficult position. Give the wealth of other topics that could be debated (some of which I present in the next paragraph), I suggest that we steer clear of a debate that focuses on the Crown indicator.
As regards other possible topics for Webmar debate, in citation analysis alone there are many topics that could produce an interesting debate. For example: (a) university rankings, (b) citation indicators, (c) mapping of science and (d) citation databases. In addition, SIG MET debates could topics outside of to citation analysis in our remit (e.g., Webmetrics). My current thinking is to go with ‘(a)’ for this year and ask someone from Leuven (e.g. Glanzel) and someone from Leiden (e.g., Van Raan). This way both the Leiden and Leuven ranking systems would be represented. What do you think?
Best regards,
Jonathan.

This is a good point--we want the debate to be lively and spirited, but not acerbic. Can we think of another good pairing for a clean joust?
It was my understanding we would have a webinar this Spring and propose a panel for the AM (as well as a workshop as a pre-con).

Dear All,
Having Loet Leydesdorff and Tony Van Raan in a debate is not the best idea. There was a rather bitter exchange between them at the Leiden S&T Conference this September. It was rather unpleasant for the the conference participants.
Also we should decide whether we are planning a Webinar or a panel for the next meeting. The Crown indicator and the new indicator developed in Leiden is used for university rankings. This is a highly controversial issue with quite a number of rankings being around. We could include this topic in the webinar, if you think that discussing indicators is too narrow.
Best regards,
Judit

Hi Angela,
?
Could you please send this list your draft of the contents of the Web-site within the next few days, so that we can keep to our target of uploading the Web-site by the end of this month?
?
Many thanks,
Jonathan.

Hi everyone,
Sorry I've missed some of these messages!? Stasa realized I hadn't been added to the listserv and has helped me catch up on what's been going on.
I would love any/all help planning the website and was just preparing something to send out to stimulate discussion.? I've attached a quick review of what the other SIG websites currently contain, crudely coded.? (Feel free to ask for clarification if any of the categories are unclear.)? I added a column for SIG/MET and proposed a few categories that we may want to include, but upper level organization is very flexible, and there may be many more elements we'd want to incorporate.? I just thought this might help to get the discussion going.? Perhaps once we identify the basic components of the website we can collaborate on the content that will be used and the organization/interface design.
Thanks!

Hi all,
?
I did not receive any suggested changes to my planned activities for the year, so I have decided to press on with the activities for December and January.?
Dec: Complete activities relating to starting the SIG.
Dec: Plan the SIG Web-site.
Jan: Prepare and upload the SIG Web site.
Jan: Set-up and advertise the student paper contest.
?
Thanks to the substantial help from Dietmar and Cassidy, most of the activities relating to starting the SIG have been completed.??? So our largest task at present is planning, preparing and uploading the SIG Web-site.? I suggest that all officers contribute to the planning and preparation of content of the Web-site, as this reduces the workload on Angela who has agreed to be both Webmaster and Communications Officer.? Could all officers please post their suggestions regarding the Web-site to this list?
?
Please note that the officers? list requires moderator intervention for postings over 40K, and that Word 2007 documents are typically about half the size of Word 2003 documents.? So in order to avoid unnecessary work for our moderator, I suggest that you post attachments in Word 2007 format.? I would like to thank Sta?a for having agreed to moderate the officers? list and for having approved my posting of over 40K.
?
Best regards,
Jonathan.

Hi Chaoqun,
?
Could you please draft your initial suggestions for the paper contest?? You may find it helpful to look at other paper contests (e.g., SIG III).
?
Best regards,
Jonathan.

Hi all,
?
Cassidy has suggested starting work on the WebMar deabate earlier than I had proposed.
?
I think we need to agree on the topic, possible speakers and moderator.? According to notes from the 2010 meeting ?A possibility for the debate topic was Crown indicators.? This debate would have two speakers and one moderator and would be streamed live for the ASIS&T audience.?? I suggest that we modify the topic to ?Crown and alternative indicators?.? This way it allows speakers to suggest and discuss alternatives.? As regards speakers, I think it a good idea to have someone who opposes the Crown (e.g., Leydesdorff) and someone who helped develop it (e.g. Van Raan, Moed).? ?What do you think?
?
Best regards,
Jonathan.

I would personally love to see a Leydesdeoff and Van Raan debate (and I
think I would not be alone here). Do you think that identifying Crown
indicators is too specific (even with the mention of "alternative
indicators")? Another idea that was floated at the AM was the idea of
debating citation metrics vs. usage metrics or other web-based metrics.
However, I could imagine this as a panel at the AM (rather than a debate)
with White (or another Drexel-ite), Leydesdorff, Thelwall (or our very own
Jonathan!), and Bollen.
The current pricing structure that has been discussed by the board for
webinars is free for members at $49 for non-ASIS&T members. However, some
webinars have been putting a small member charge ($10-$20) if the speakers
require any funding.
