Dear Stasa,
Thanks very much for forming this well-considered account of the way towards
what seems likely to be a very productive year.
My suggestions are:
* I did not see in your update of work carried out that you have arranged to amend the membership of the Sigmet-officers list, to ensure that the incoming officers have all been added to the list; has this been done?
* You wrote: “2. ASIST Workshop … If we decide to have full papers, we might try to arrange for a special issue of a journal as a venue to publish those.” You may want to investigate the possibility of publishing workshop content in Research Trends.
* You wrote “6. Deciding on dates when to issue calls for ASIST Workshop, ASIST Panels and Student Paper Contest. Any suggestions?” I suggest that the first call for the Student Paper Contest should be published as soon as the details are finalised; am earlier call would allow more time for both the students and the reviewers.
* You wrote “If you have any other ideas please feel free to share. “ Mike Thelwall and I are currently drafting a proposal for a quantitative Doctoral forum, to be held in spring 2012 at Wolverhampton, to commemorate ASSIST’s 75th anniversary. SIG/MET may want to endorse this event.
Best,
Jonathan.

Dear all,
Thank you for agreeing to serve as officers of SIG Metrics. I'm very
excited about the year ahead.
I first want to update you with some of the things I did:
- Worked with Jan and Angela to update both ASIST and our website so
that it accurately presents the list of officers, has a link to the
sigmetrics mailing list and has old content (Call for 2011 Student Paper
Contest and information on ASIST Workshop) removed and new content (such
as call for papers for STI 2012 Montreal and Collnet 2012) added. Once
the iConference issues a program it would be nice to link to it, since
there will be a panel on metrics.
-I've emailed Irene Travis, the editor of the Bulletin of the American
Society for Information Science and Technology regarding the possibility
of a special issue of the bulletin in honor of the 75th anniversary of
ASIST.
- Dietmar and Judit wrote a report on SIG MET activities at the past
ASIST meeting for the next issue of ISSI Newsletter.
- I've asked Angela to do the first webinar on visualization and she has
agreed. However, in the meantime, on November 15th Katy Borner had a
webinar on a similar topic ( Envisioning Science and Technology) that
has not been associated with SIG MET. I was not aware of it being planned.
ACTION ITEMS:
1. In light of the webinar that Katy had do we still want to pursue a
webinar on visualization. What are the other possible topics that we
might want to pursue? Some possible suggestions for webinars other than
visualization (bibliometrics and humanities; metrics: traditional and
alternative). Your thoughts on this are much appreciated.
2. ASIST Workshop. The 2011 workshop was very successful. We should
start planning for the next one. Dietmar suggested we have both full and
work-in-progress papers as well as the posters next year. I like that
idea. It would also mean that we'll need to advertise earlier than last
year so that there is time to write these contributions. If we decide to
have full papers, we might try to arrange for a special issue of a
journal as a venue to publish those. Please share your ideas regarding
the workshop.
3. ASIST panels. It would be nice to have a number of panels at ASIST.
While we can certainly organize a number of panels I believe it would be
nice to send a call for proposals for panels to all the current members
of the SIG Metrics. Are there any suggestions on possible panels
co-sponsored by other SIGs?
4. I want to thank Jonathan for all the effort he put in establishing
special relationships with Research Trends. While I would be happy to
take on the communication with them is anyone interested in taking on
this? If so, please let me know.
5. I want to contact Thomson Reuters regarding reviving the citation
analysis award. Do you know who was in charge of it before? Any
suggestions on who to contact?
6. Deciding on dates when to issue calls for ASIST Workshop, ASIST
Panels and Student Paper Contest. Any suggestions?
7. At the annual meeting we discussed pros and cons of having Facebook
page. Do we want to add one?
If you have any other ideas please feel free to share. Looking forward
to hearing from you regarding our plans for this coming year.
Best,
Stasa
