The University of Minnesota Libraries seek an innovative, energetic and service-oriented professional for the position of Director, Agricultural, Biological and Environmental Sciences Department (ABE). ABE is one of six departments in the Academic Programs (AP) Division, reporting to the Associate University Librarian for Academic Programs. The University is undergoing a strategic positioning process and the Libraries are fully engaged in this process, developing a number of forward looking projects designed to make libraries an integral part of the university of the future. The Director will have exciting opportunities to help shape new programs and initiatives such as our budding repository (University Digital Conservancy), the SMART Learning Commons, and an outreach program with the university's Office of Business Development. 
Responsibilities 
Collaborate with other AP and library leaders to create a shared vision for the future and develop dynamic services and programs that anticipate and fulfill the changing needs of our clientele. Build strong relationships with the university science community and relevant local communities. Create strong liaison relationships with relevant college administrators. Provide leadership for departmental staff to proactively advance the teaching, research, and service activities of faculty, staff, and students. Empower and enable ABE staff in developing the skills and perspectives necessary to support client communities, which are increasingly interdisciplinary in nature. Contribute to overall leadership of the University Libraries in planning, policy development, and resource allocation. Participate in libraries-wide initiatives. 
ABE has 7.5 librarians and 11 support staff located in one large library and 4 branches, all but one located on the St. Paul campus. Core responsibilities for ABE staff include developing collaborative relationships with academic departments, creating new programs and initiatives that respond to trends in scientific research, collection management, creating information literacy programs, and providing reference services. As administrative head of ABE, the Director guides the department in management activities such as planning and resource management, process improvement, and assessment of services and collections. 
The successful candidate will also contribute to the Libraries, the campus, and the profession, engaging with colleagues nationally as s/he works toward continuous appointment. 
The University Libraries are an integral part of campus life and a significant contributor of resources and programs within the metropolitan area and the state. The Libraries offer a highly collaborative environment, programs to develop and integrate digital resources and tools, digitization services, literacy initiatives, a commitment to organization development, and a record of national and international collaboration. 
QUALIFICATIONS. 
Required: ALA-accredited Masters degree in Library/ Information Science, or equivalent combination of an advanced degree with relevant experience. Minimum of three years experience in progressively responsible positions within an academic library (or related) environment. Successful supervisory experience, including the ability to lead and motivate librarians and staff. Demonstrated understanding of the science research process and scholarly communication, scientific publishing, and copyright issues. Experience with liaison relationships, collection management, reference, or instruction. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills. Demonstrated creativity, initiative and self-direction. Ability to respond effectively to changing needs and priorities. Ability to work both independently and in cooperation with colleagues and library users in a diverse, service-oriented, collaborative environment. 
Preferred: Undergraduate or graduate degree in a biological, agricultural, or environmental sciences field, or significant discipline-specific experience in an academic library. Experience in developing working partnerships with academic departments and other campus communities. Experience in developing information literacy programs. Knowledge of emerging trends in information and educational technology and digital libraries. Experience in integrating new technologies into the delivery of information services. Evidence of creative thinking. Demonstrated involvement in professional activities. 
SALARY AND BENEFITS: This is a full-time, 12-month, academic professional position on continuous-appointment track or with continuous appointment. Appointment is at the Assistant or Associate Librarian rank, depending on qualifications. The Libraries offer a competitive salary, commensurate with experience.
