Sorry for late feedback.
I was a bit more swamped than ususal.
I don't have direct experience of "knowledge" mapping.
But what I read about it reminds me of "information" mapping that was
pioneered in particular by Woody Horton.
And even more practical things that information officers have been doing
for ages that is expertise directories of the staff as a complement to
organizational or other formal directories. Not to mention all sorts
of guides produced by reference librarians.
This is to say that the "technical" aspects of the problem are pretty
well known, as is often the case in our field. What is missing is a
natural history of all the environmental circumstances that relate to
positive and negative outcomes.
Of course the literature is full of stories and cases, but I cannot
avoid a sense that they are selected with a view to illustrate a
particular point rather than describe the array of real life
circumstances upon which some true taxonomy, in the life sciences
sense, can be drawn.
