I share the concerns of the contributor (with some limited 
competence in reading French).

And have a superstitious fear of a revisitation of Babel.

There may be forces in the diffusion of English which will/have 
transformed English itself, but restrained by the continuing 
dissemination of North American forms/norms.

Consider (and contrast) the transformation of Latin in 
Carolingian Europe.
