Sometimes non-New Yorkers may not appreciate the enormity of the subway
system we have. Some of the major hubs have many, many entry/exit points, to
say nothing of various underground conduits that combine stations. So
compared to most subway systems the scale is pretty daunting. Saul Wurman
type maps, charts and signs would be too civilized for us anyway! Having
said that there are street exit signs (79th St SW) and 'you're here' type
maps. I figure a proper subway system re-signage would cost well over a
quarter billion dollars. We'd like to think of our system as subterranean
adventure and useful guidance would destroy it.

It depends.
If it didn't, you'd be out of a job.
