Andrew Boyd:
"As an aside, I've seen a confusion between conceptual design
prototyping and detailed design specification many times - as Matt
says, conceptual design is rapid and messy (as it should be). "
Yeah, pretty much why I raised the issue. I can see issues with having
a prototype that is throwaway even before the implementation phase
starts.
- The client sees / likes and approves the prototype, but the
detailed spec (which they don't read) gradually deviates from it over
the course of the project
- The detailed spec (whatever form that takes) is likely to be less
user friendly to developers and clients alike, and therefore everyone
will prefer to stick to the prototype as a 'spec'
We work on agile projects a lot, and although we've learned to be
realistic about what will actually get into production there are
always lots of changes throughout the project.
As Alexander Johannesen said, the code from a prototyping application
is unlikely to be usable in production, but *if* it is easy enough to
update why not use it as the specification for the project, at least
functionally - the graphical aspects are probably best handled
separately.
