I think Dave's got a good bead on this one. Microsoft's internal and  
external mythos has always been that anyone who can write code is  
automatically presumed capable of designing elegant software, and  
Expression certainly seems to be designed around that myth.

Gotta love Microsoft - they replace the designer of Windows 1.0 with  
the designer of Lotus Notes and call it passing the torch.
