[Sigia-l] Dress Code

Politeness is twofold: It's hypocrisy, but it's also a kindness.
Dressing "up" a little for an interview is a way of saying that you care
enough about the job/company/interviewers that you will go through the
trouble of putting on nice clothes for them at least once. It's
courteous.

Also, advertising works, and any sale (interview included) has a strong
emotional component. Dressing up helps you sell yourself. Sex sells, so
much so that the way we hide our sexual attributes (a.k.a. clothing) has
become a surrogate for them. Fashion sells too.

If you're about to tell me that tech people don't care about image, I'll
refer you to Alan Cooper's description of this character trait:

"Homo Logicus care very much about projecting the image that they don't
care about their image."

I'd like to understand this better. If the workplace is in fact informal
(i.e. it's OK to wear sneakers on a daily basis) are you saying that the
candidate should make an exception specifically for the interview and
not
wear them, even though he'd be normally wearing them if accepted? In
other
words, should an applicant dress for the interview in something that
they
wouldn't want to wear while working? Is the interview more like an
average
snapshot or a formal portrait shot? Should it be a declaration of
personal
preferences/intentions or a pre-signaling of conformance? Finally, for
whose
benefit is the interview dress code designed, the applicant or the
company?
