We have a Director level position opening up at Thomson West to lead
the UX practice for Westlaw, a leading legal research tool. The job
description is below. I will be attending the IA Summit in Las Vegas

Director, User Experience

Thomson West is seeking an experienced, energetic leader for our user
experience group. The Director of User Experience is responsible for
oversight of user research and testing, interaction design and
information architecture design for Westlaw.com, the industry leader
in legal research.

The UX Director works closely with the team to develop user-centered
products and features, oversees the organizational and professional
development of a growing team of usability engineers, visual
designers, interaction designers and web developers, evangelizes user
centered design and consults with product developers throughout the
broader organization. Reports to Vice President of Westlaw Product
Development.

Responsibilities
•	Collaborate with interaction designers, usability engineers, graphic
designers, business partners, and developers, to design the user
interface, information architecture and interaction design of Westlaw.
•	Provide leadership, management and supervision as needed to the UX team.
•	Communicate and evangelize about user centered design and customer
interaction within the New Product Development group and beyond.
•	Consult on the development of usable organization and navigation
systems and user interfaces for products and features.
•	Direct the Manager of User Experience, who is responsible for
overseeing the development and implementation of a formal program of
user research and usability testing.
•	Participate in all aspects of user experience design as needed to
provide expertise and guidance. This participation may include
conducting usability tests, analyzing and presenting findings,
conducting contextual inquiry, leading working sessions and developing
blue prints/wireframes,
•	Stay abreast of advances on the web (both technical and
experiential) and look for ways to appropriately integrate these
advances into the Westlaw interface.
•	Ensure that Westlaw maintains a cohesive user interface as it
evolves by developing, maintaining and administering a style guide
and/or pattern library.
•	Ensure integration of efforts by staying informed of major
initiatives, collaborating with peers to combine efforts, and creating
synergies where appropriate.


Required Skills
•	Demonstrated leadership experience in User Experience Design with
deep expertise in interaction design, information architecture,
usability engineering or all three.
•	Demonstrated management and supervision skills and experience.
•	Demonstrated skill motivating a team.
•	Solid understanding of web technology, including technical
capabilities and limitations•
•	Expert understanding of methods for designing easy to use
interfaces, including user and task analysis, information
architecture, interface design, heuristic evaluation, and usability
testing.
•	Demonstrated ability to document designs in scenarios, workflows,
site architectures, interaction notes, and page template/wireframe
formats
•	Understand the principles of information organization and user
interface design
•	5-7 years experience with information architecture, interaction
design, and usability testing of websites, intranets, and/or web-based
products and services.
•	Ability to lead multi-disciplinary teams to consensus on design decisions
•	Ability to interact positively with all levels of employees and management
•	Public speaking proficiency and experience.
•	Excellent oral, written and interpersonal skills


Preferred Skills/Experience
•	Master's degree in information science, information design,
human-computer interaction, anthropology, cognitive psychology or
related fields.
•	Knowledge of legal field a plus
