I was just playing with a Blogger template the other week. The cruft that's
around the basic stuff in the source is ridiculous. No doubt to accommodate
multiple templates, but, like I said, once you decide to deviate even
moderately from the given code/template even Blogger isn't so friendly.

Perhaps. Either there's not much money to be made and therefore they don't
bother or they're leaving money on the table.
The whole scene needs a rethink.
