It seems you're really just replacing tagging with tagging, changing
only the method by which blog posts get tagged.

So long as readers have the ability to view all posts tagged X then
you've really not changed much, other than perhaps where on the page the
user might find a link to everything tagged X, or Y, or Z.

8000 blogs with 8000 different combinations of categories is just as
messy as 8000 different combinations of tags.
