I've been watching this thread evolve over the last few days: the discussion
around getting into doing IA work though taking on the BA role, what does a
BA do and how does one break in.
At the risk of shameless self promotion, may I suggest that those of you who
are interested in expanding their BA skills set, look into the Writing
Business Requirements For Information Architects workshop at the IA Summit.
We (me and my workshop partner) designed this workshop to address precisely
the need articulated in this thread: IAs are being asked to either work with
BAs who are writing requirements or act as BAs and write the requirements
themselves. The half-day workshop will address how to gather write and
analyze business requirements. It's a great introduction for those wanting
break in to this part of the work. It's also useful to those who have been
tasked with writing the business requirements already but may not be feeling
very sure of themselves. We will provide you with a clear set of tools to
get you from the hazy world of ambiguous requirements to a clean, useful set
of requirements.
