Yep, I do that on my blog, in fact.

Gotcha, I still bet the SSL was assigned to a particular "real"
directory and not a virtual one (based on what you have to fill out to
create one), but I may be off on that. I will check with my Sys Admin.
If it can be done as you're suggesting, that opens a slew of
possibilities with mod_rewrites. Nice!
