Hopefully we are talking about the same thing, but a browser request to a
server, service, app, etc can be made to look like anything before it
reaches that destination and the URL string can be rewritten to appear as
pretty much anything back to the browser, meaning you can virtualize any
real or fake hierarchical/file system, including directories. About four
years ago I designed an architecture whereby 3/4 of it was served via SSL
and, depending on what was going on, parts of the entire site came in and
out of that SSL umbrella. I didn't code it so, sorry, I don't know for a
fact how it was done.
