I can see only two reasons for using sub domains
1. Quick access to a deeply nested location with a very specific purpose
2. It is a separate dedicated website. 
It is reasonable to expect certain consistent presentation standards on
website. A website on a sub-domain is often located on a separate server
with a different (web) management authority and presentation standards.
