[Sigia-l] Card Sorting for a site with a thousand topics

Hi there,

I'm in the middle of a IA redesign project, where the we are looking at doing some card sorting. I've done card sorting in the past, but this is different for a couple of main reasons. First, there are about a thousand topics. Secondly the topics don't live in fully-contained verticals, ie. you could not do a vertical-by-vertical card sort. You have to be able to look at the whole thing as a whole.

The reason we're considering a card-sort is that post-usability testing, we've identified topics that don't have a well-defined home, and a few topic hubs don't seem to be intuitive in terms of grouping and location. 

Has anybody participated or conducted a card sort of a similar type/scale. Any insights will be very valuable.
