Well put. But Christopher says it's more efficient to sell books into the
"silo" mindset. :-)

The irony here is that Christopher's "master of one trade" doesn't know or
care about the whole problem. In one sense, the less he knows about the
whole problem, the more he can concentrate on the one trade he knows about.

This is what I've been strongly objecting to for years here: focusing on
one's "deliverables" as dictated by one's title, as opposed to focusing on
solving the whole problem strategically.

The practical outcome of the "deliverables culture" is that we miss the
forest for the trees. On a committee of masters-of-one-trade, who defines
the problem, who then frames the questions, who provides the strategic
direction, who integrates the facets to shape the whole?

Some guy from accounting? PM? BA? Some SVP from a corner office? The CIO?
The tragedy of our design world is such that it may well be one of the
above, and often is.
