Ya see, this is why IxDA has from the very beginning stayed away from
what people call themselves. Who cares about titles (well, I actually
do, but that's a different thread). The real need is creating a body
of knowledge and a community of practice. When it comes to design,
there are very few design disciplines that have NO, 0, nada overlap
with other design disciplines. So many people do the same thing.
But there are clear theories that engage and educate us to help us in
our practice and this is where I think IA, IxD, etc. are powerful
disciplines.
Just like there is Typography, iconography which are their own
disciplines but have deep overlap with graphic design, so is IA and
IxD and even Graphic Design all distinct disciplines with strong
bodies of knowledge.
How do you create a profession without good strong educational
disciplines from which to build on? Yes, Mentorship is good, but that
doesn't scale nor does it create a means of sharing with those who
engage a discipline or practice from an adjacent practice or
discipline.
Let's stop talking about titles and start answering the problems that
UX based practitioners are facing.
