How do you measure a taxonomy?

The next Taxonomy Community of Practice call is on Wednesday April 26th,

Metrics and Measurement are very broad areas. (Ambiguous terms?) What are we
measuring? What is the significance? What are the qualitative versus
quantitative approaches to measuring the effectiveness of a taxonomy? 

People engaging in taxonomy projects need to approach measurement from two
perspectives. 1. How well is the taxonomy performing? and 2. What are the
costs associated with maintenance, updates and application of the taxonomy? 
This session will focus on the first issue with some high level approaches
to the second. Though we can't get into detailed ROI analysis (ROI is
dependent on much larger issues around specific business problems that are
being solved) we can give you approaches to measuring various aspects of
your taxonomy project. 

. How do we measure the value of a taxonomy?
. How can we estimate costs associated with indexing?
. What are some ways of measuring effectiveness? 
. How can we make the business case credible?
. What are some ways to develop baselines?

Search effectiveness, business case metrics, usability testing

We are taking a broad brush approach during this session. 
We'll hear from Ron Daniel of Taxonomy Strategies, Lynn Boyden of Symantec
and Christine Connors of Raytheon. 

About your presenters: 

Ron Daniels is an expert on XML industry standards, an active member of the
XML and metadata standardization communities, and a noted digital library
researcher. He chaired the PRISM (Publishers Requirements for Industry
Standard Metadata) working group (prismstandard.org), and is acting chair of
the XML Linking working group. He has been a member of the RDF working
groups, and has co- edited numerous specifications including PRISM,
XPointer, three IETF RFCs, and the first two Dublin Core (dublincore.org)
reports. 

Lynn Boyden is an Information Architect with Symantec, Inc., specializing in
the development of user experience of information retrieval and search. She
has worked in a wide variety of positions, most relevantly as an information
architect with a number of interactive agencies in the Los Angeles area.
During these stints she worked with such clients as the Library of Congress,
Citibank, LSI Logic Storage, and Magnetek. With Chris Chandler, she teaches
Information Architecture in the graduate program in Information Studies at
UCLA. She holds her Masters in Library and Information Science from UCLA,
with a specialization in the organization of information and the
user-centered design of information systems. She is one of the original
instigators of the Information Architecture Slam. 

Christine Connors is Raytheon's Metadata Architect, part of Corporate IT's
Information and Knowledge Management Strategic Initiative. The goals of the
program are to provide continuity through the information life cycle and
implement easy to use tools for information publishing, retrieval and
storage. She leads the Knowledge Representation Team, which won the 2003
Raytheon Excellence in IT Award for Collaboration and Knowledge Management.
Christine has been a member of SLA since 1999, and is also affiliated with
ASIS&T. Christine earned a B.S. in Theatre Arts Management from Ithaca
College and an M.S. in Library and Information Science from Simmons College.
