I'm with you there. I keep lots of articles, conference proceedings,
etc. on my hard drive which I search through using Copernic, but I
would never think of taking the time to enter in all my non-digital
media. The ideal situation is when a book of proceedings or research
*comes with* a PDF version of the whole thing. I love it when that
happens.
And regarding LibraryThing in particular, what is the benefit of
having this on the Web? If you post your fully categorized collection,
wouldn't the primary benefit be to see what's in other peoples'
collections under the same or similar categories? This tool doesn't
seem to be able to let you do that (outside of taking you to Amazon,
where you can at least find some "also boughts"). Maybe Flickr has
brainwashed me, but this doesn't seem near as useful/fun as it could
be.
