Fwd: [Sigia-l] Does interface design matter?

Of course UI design matters...what a ridiculous question.
A feature or function doesn't exist without an interface. How would
you drive without a steering wheel or gas pedal (or something that
replicates their purpose)?
I like to say "Design happens" (like something else oft said to
happen). If there's no "UI designer" on the team, the developer or BA
or someone else serves that purpose...because you have to have a UI.
The question really is who does the design, what skills they have, and
what process is used to do it. In effect "how good does the design
need to be?" becomes the question. Like all quality attributes,
there's a point of diminishing returns. Period.
So...interface design is REQUIRED...and it should be done just well
enough to acheive the maximum benefit for the cost required...and no
better than than...(ideally).
I've long thought Yahoo buying Oddpost was a clear case of a company
buying a superior UI. I'd assume the Oddposters did pretty well on
that sale. Not bad for basically replicating an Oulook-ish UI using
web technology. Their UI wasn't so innovative, but the way they
implemented it was.
