This very topic was debated in one of the longer threads ever on this list
not too long ago. You haven't said/asked anything that wasn't covered in one
of the posts (from me or others) in that thread. I encourage you to review
it.

As to whether you should believe me: the whole point of my argument is that
you shouldn't be in the business of "believing" anybody. Design is not faith
based. In that sense, best practices is faith that others understand *your*
context better than you and have solved *your* specific problem already. My
advice is to refer to whatever you think might be helpful to *you* but
always remain skeptical and filter it through the prism of your contextual
constraints and goals.
