Well, if you're on a Mac, OmniGraffle Pro has a neat trick.

Just drag the root directory onto the OmniGraffle application icon in
the dock and grab a coffee. A few minutes later, you will have
what-passes-as-traditional-in-most-shops hierarchical site map with
each element displaying name, attributes and the proper icon (folder
have folder icons, PDFs look like PDFs, HTML picks up your default
browser's HTML icon, etc.) The arrows connecting the parents to their
children are "smart".

No brainer.
