4. The Catalogue
Chris Oakley (UK)
Oakley's video work deals with the retail environment and offers a bleak
vision of surveillance technology, RFID and data brokers, where access to
consumers' data has been extended beyond our purchasing habits and lifestyle
choices to our very fabric, with predictions of our future health prospects
made en masse via analysis of the data from our weekly shop. Utilising
footage from a shopping mall manipulated through screen overlays and motion
tracking, 'The Catalogue' places the viewer into the position of a remote
and dispassionate agency, observing humanity as a series of units whose
value is defined by their spending capacity and future needs.
