Since I think this whole thread started with a job reqs question, it's
instructive to review why a company would "require" an IA to be proficient
in UML:

1   They are too cheap to hire another non-programmer
2   They are really looking for a programmer, but what the heck, if the
person can handle other non-essential stuff like IA/design, why not
3   The project is entirely tech-driven
4   It's a RUP shop, hence everything looks like a UML nail
5   They have lazy programmers, if the person can create their UML, hey, why
not
6   It's fashionable
7   The project is driven by deliverables culture, the prettier and/or more
complex the better
8   Company culture firmly believes system efficiency trumps user
experience.
