For someone now used to all the niceties of the digital world where the
search can be pivoted on many axes, etc, it surely was. Yes, I could get a
deck of PostIts and plunge right into a 20-minute back and forth with the
Index, but who has time for that? This is 2005.

I wouldn't know. For all I know, the Index there was good enough for a book,
but my point is that even the best such index doesn't begin to approach the
efficiency with which one can unearth stuff in the digital world.
Now, you sound like you've done some cookbook indexing. What cuisine? :-)
