It is gaining popularity in some situations. I know of a few companies/consultancies that are using the Tobii eye-tracking hardware as part of their usability toolkits. http://www.tobii.com/
I just returned from UPA in Montreal and heard from these two companies about their use of the Tobii equipment in their studies:
- User Centric http://www.usercentric.com/UC/prodserv.asp?menu=0&sub=6
- Cesart http://www.cesart.com/flash/
Here's a blog dedicated to it, with some heat maps to show user tracking: http://blog.eyetools.net/
