Good topic,Bob !!
<rant>
Every time I go to the Edmunds.com web-site,I think that:
(1)..they have a scarcity of the-guys-who-make-web-sites-usable and/or
(2)..they have management who have a what's-usability-gotta-do-with-it
approach and/or
(3)..they NEVER did do a competitive analysis of the web-site and/or
(4)..they never did read the *famous* book on home-pages by you-know-who :)
</rant>
I had an interesting conversation with a member on another group,who
just started working for Edmunds.com,and she did confirm some of my
thoughts.This is what she had to say:
<quote>........they have never had usability in their organization so
I have the challenge of developing all of their usability
guidelines</quote>
Famous last words??

Edmunds.com = HAH !
Kbb.com = wins hands down atleast in terms of JUST the home-page
design Vs Edmunds.com
