[Sigia-l] Managing terms in mutliple inter-related taxonomy

I need advice on how to use software tools to manage several inter-related
taxonomies.
When Sikorsky Aircraft works on a new helicopter program with the
government, they create a work breakdown structure of the deliverables.
This work breakdown structure is in effect a taxonomy of the aircraft
system. The work breakdown structure is based on a corporate standard and
is tailored to the program, often because of customer demands. (Customers
also have standards.) I am planning on using this work breakdown structure
as part of a keyword scheme for a program's extranet (IDE - Integrated
Digital Environment - in the parlance of government contracts).
I would like to manage the standard and the several program taxonomies with
software tools so I can correlate the terms in one taxonomy with another.
Here are some of the difficulties that I need to overcome:
- The preferred term in the standard may have an alternate preferred
synonym in a program taxonomy.
- A term may have different broader terms in the several taxonomies.
Usually, the broader term in the program taxonomy is also part of the
standard taxonomy. The whole branch of terms in the program taxonomy
usually moves together as a group.
- A program-defined class notation (e.g. 1.01.02 ) needs to be
generated for the term in each program taxonomy
Additionally, I need a way to indicate these relationships so that when I
export the taxonomy to use in the program's IDE, the preferred synonym, the
program-specific hierarchies, and the program's class notation is exported.
I have just begun testing WebChoir TCS-9. The tool doesn't seem to fit
these needs. Does anyone have ideas on how I can use a tool (or set of
tools) to accomplish my objectives?
Thanks.
