[Sigia-l] To sort or not to sort

Hi Mark -

Using the "sort results by" option on a relevancy search is tricky. You
are right - that is why we didn't include this option in our relevancy
search. Without knowing the context of your search, I'd guess that the
only basic fields one would want to sort a relevancy search by include
file type, publication date... hmmm, other than that, I'm not sure it
would work or even be a desirable feature for the users.

Can you give any examples of what types of searches the users would be
performing in your example, or why they would want or need a sort
option?

Sarah

Sarah, thanks for sharing. I see the reasoning and advantages for each
scenario you described. Are you suggesting to try out the "sort results
by" on the relevancy search? I'm wondering how that would affect/skew
the results. If the search is returning results based on relevancy, how
does a user preference regarding the sort order of the results factor in
to that equation? (which is maybe why you decided not to include it in
your relevancy search ;)
