The next Taxonomy Community of Practice call is on Wednesday January 4th,
2006 at 2:00 PM EDT. (This is actually the December scheduled call...) The
topic is "Retrospective Indexing".  Cost is $50 per attendee. Register for

This month's call looks at challenges associated with deploying a taxonomy
through tagging of large numbers of legacy documents - "retrospective
indexing".

How do you tag large numbers of documents that have no metadata and have no
basic organizational scheme?

The Challenge of "Retrospective Indexing"
Content exists in various states of organization in static web pages, on
various file servers or in content and document management systems. In some
cases metadata has been applied haphazardly, in some cases not at all.
There may or may not be value in some of those documents, but the cost of
reviewing manually and indexing all of them is prohibitive. We need to
somehow address these issues in a "value appropriate" manner.

In this session we'll hear from Nancy Linwood of DuPont and Yves Schabes of
Teragram who will talk about various considerations of these types of
projects including:
- How to approach the "value continuum" of content
- How to cost justify efforts
- Ownership of legacy content
- Manual, automated and hybrid approaches
- Statistical analysis versus rules based approaches
- The role of linguistic analysis
