The map is not the territory.

For most large sites, served dynamically, the database architecture is
different from the file system is different from the url-implied
architecture is different from the implied content organization is
different from the actual content organization.

What would software map?

Form has nothing to do with function. Software (so far) infers form,
but a site map is more concerned with function.

If dynamic sites managed content and ontology as part of the
application layer, then software could potentially access the kinds of
meta data required to infer function.

It'd be easier to maintain content inventories and other functional
requirements in a database that naturally extended to serve the actual
site. Maybe someone should add a feaure like this in their CMS.
