I've found that every large, successful mailing list has its trolls. 
It's a sign of success (or at least popularity).  The phenomonon 
extensively documented on Wikipedia:

My advice to people tempted to confrontational truth-seeking is to quote 
the Beastie Boys: "It takes a second to wreck it, it takes time to build. 
You gots to chill."
