A typical McMaster user wouldn't have to read through the whole sea of words
per se. They are capable of quick scanning because there is an associative
progression in the list, which McMaster uses in its catalog also.  (Example,
nails next to nailers,  nailers next to staplers, etc.)  I like this
associative progression better than the alphabetical lists in Grainger.  If
you are using the wrong term when looking at the alphabetical list, it takes
more time to find the information.  (For my particular case, I was looking
for gate sliders. Using McMaster's lists, I was easily drawn to the correct
term "Door Track and Hangers.")

If I understood Jared correctly, this associative progression of terms
"lengthens" the navigation label of any one term, increasing the scent of
information.
