There is "index server" and the indexing service in XP. The indexing
service comes with XP, though I don't think it is enabled by
default.

To enable the indexing services in XP:

 - Start > Search > Files and folders...

 - click "Change preferences" in the menubar on the left.

 - click "With Indexing Service (for faster local searches)".
Then you can enable it with the defaults or custom config.

I don't use this and I haven't tried the Google Desktop. I suspect
that indexing services are not as good and harder to configure.

Even so, XP does have indexing built-in (I think W2K has something
similar but I'm not sure).
