[Sigia-l] gathering demographics after the fact

Our client is a national specialized recruiting site with an active database
of about 40,000 profiles.  The client would like to start gathering some
demographic information, for use in sales and marketing efforts only.  (It
would not be viewable by prospective employers)  

For new registrants, the gathering would likely take the place of another
page in the profile-generation process.  The question is how/where to
gracefully request the existing users to provide this additional
information.  Currently, registered users login to the site on every visit -
there's no auto-login feature.

Anyone have any experience/opinion for what the mechanism for gathering the
demographics should be, and also how to position the gathering process so as
to compel users to go through it?
