This has also been the standard practice for decades for bringing shows to
Broadway, via Off-, Off-Off- and Off-Off-Off-Broadway: open small, observe,
change, open bigger, etc. A play might be done edgy in New Haven, tweaked
nightly for New York audiences in a downtown theater, then moved to Broadway
and given a more showy outlook. By the time it gets to Los Angeles as a
movie, the original play will have gone through many "personas" reflecting
its audiences and their reactions along the way.
