How do you organize your digital pictures? Pros and cons?

I make a few hundred pictures a month. I use the folder structure to
organize my pictures, like this: (not all folders opened)

My Pictures
- 2002
- 2003
- 2004
-- 1 jan
-- 2 feb
--- holiday
--- maria birthday
-- 3 mar


I put pictures in monthly folders, and sometimes add a topical
subfolder. Sometimes I do a subfolder by date if I just take lots of
pictures one day but there's no specific topic for them. Seems to work
and scale pretty well for me. 

The months are labeled "1 jan" because just doing "1" doesn't work (I
can never remember what number august is), and just doing "jan" doesn't
work either (sorting alphabetically).
